The republished Summer Solstice 1988/2000 journal is dedicated to Hastiin Sam B. Boone, Navajo herbalist and World War 2 veteran.
"In the summer of 1981, Hastiin Sam B. Boone asked me to help him document his knowledge of ceremonial and medicinal plants. According to Boone, many traditional elders had passed away, taking with them valuable religious oral history, including songs, prayers, legends, and medicinal knowledge. This knowledge was irretrievable and vital to the preservation of Navajo folklore and history. Boone was dedicated to preserving his unique knowledge for his children and future generations of Navajo. He did not want to deprive them of his intimate understanding of the environment and the cultural heritage he possessed." Phyllis Hogan, excerpt from journal , page 1.

The Fall Equinox 2000 journal is dedicated to Jerome Jackson, a Navajo medicinal herb collector, artist and political activist.
"This Jerome Jackson journal came about as a result of a collaboration between NAU anthropology graduate student, Erian Humphreys, and AERA executive director, Phyllis Hogan. As an independent study Erian teamed up with Phyllis to interview a Native American activist involved with Navajo-Hopi relocation issues. Phyllis thought of Jerome Jackson because he is an advocate against Navajo relocation, and he is actively teaching his herbal knowledge to the next generation. In addition, Jerome has been collecting medicinal plants for Phyllis'; shop, The Winter Sun Trading Company, for twelve years and has co-taught ethnobotany classes with Phyllis."
